Tips for Optimal Oral Health
Having a healthy smile begins with a thorough daily oral care routine and visiting the dentist twice a year. There are ways to boost your routine to better protect and maintain your oral health between dental visits.
At Premier Smiles, we offer a variety of dental procedures to restore oral health and create beautiful smiles. Here are some steps you can add to your routine to better the health of your smile.
Combat Bad Breath
If you feel that even after brushing your teeth twice daily that your breath still stinks, try adding mouthwash and brushing the tongue, cheeks, and roof of your mouth.
Food debris can stick to these areas and create a breeding ground for bacteria that omit smelly gasses. By brushing the tongue, cheeks, and roof of your mouth, you can remove this debris and keep the mouth clean. Adding mouthwash at the end of your routine can also ensure all debris is removed and leave you with fresh breath.
However, if adding these steps does not cure bad breath, be sure to speak to our dentists so we can determine it is not due to untreated decay or infection.
Floss
A typically skipped step in an oral care routine, flossing at least once a day can greatly improve the freshness of your breath.
If you can floss more than once a day, that can be beneficial to you and your oral health. Flossing allows you to reach the spaces between the gums and teeth where food and plaque reside. Toothbrushes cannot reach these spaces and, if left, the debris can start to irritate the gums and cause gum disease. Floss can be found in mint flavor, which adds an additional boost to combating smelly breath. If you notice bleeding as your floss, either you have not flossed regularly or it can be a sign of gum disease.
Maintaining a Healthy Diet
Eating more fruits and vegetables can aid in keeping the smile clean throughout the day. Vegetables like celery have a texture that can act as the bristles of a toothbrush. Apples also offer the same benefit as well as vitamins that are necessary for overall health.
